Museum of Art and Architecture in Nanjing by Steven Holl

The ongoing project 'Nanjing Museum of Art and Architecture' by American architect Steven Holl is located at the entrance to the 'Contemporary International Practical Exhibition of Architecture' and is intended to stimulate tourist traffic in the seven-million-strong Chinese metropolis. Holl's museum is situated in the heart of a national park, fifteen kilometers from the center of Nanjing. The entire project is funded from private sources and, in addition to the art center, the complex includes a congress center and twenty villas designed by renowned architects and artists such as Ai Weiwei or David Adjaye.
The main structure of the museum consists of a cubic base made of black exposed concrete poured into bamboo formwork. Above the base hovers a light figure of the upper gallery, which is suspended high in the air, unfolds in a clockwise direction, and culminates in a position looking out towards the main city of the great Ming dynasty.
