Rumors about a possible curator for the upcoming Venice Biennale emerged even during Chipperfield's leadership. All speculation ceased when the president of the Venice Biennale, Paolo Baratta, announced at the beginning of this year after a board meeting that the director of the 14th Architecture Biennale would be the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas, who received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in Venice three years ago. The theme of the future biennale has not yet been announced, but Koolhaas commented on his new role, saying that he would like his exhibition to "provide a new perspective on the basic architectural elements that all architects use daily, so that we can discover something new in architecture." Koolhaas and his team have a year and a half to finalize the program, participants, and individual exhibitions. The doors of the 14th Architecture Biennale will open on June 7, 2014, and the exhibition will last until November 23, 2014.
