French architect Jean Nouvel presented a project last Wednesday for the redevelopment of the eleven-hectare Ile Seguin island in the Paris district of Boulogne-Billancourt, which was used by the Renault car manufacturer for industrial production until 1992, and is now set to host a cultural center. At one end of the elongated island, a music center is planned, featuring a conservatory, a medium-sized concert hall for classical music, and one large auditorium. At the opposite end of the island, a 20,000 m² gallery is planned to serve the cultural foundation of Renault. The cultural institutions at both ends of the island will be connected by a complex of cinemas with a total capacity of 3,200 seats. The design of green spaces and rooftop gardens will be overseen by architect Michel Desvigne. Nouvel's project is expected to be completed in seven years, while in the past decade, architects have come up with one proposal after another (OMA, Tadao Ando, Steven Holl,...), and nothing has happened with the island, which has increasingly deteriorated. According to his own statements, the architect focused on shaping the landscape and architecture in relation to the surrounding nature. His goal is to create a new quarter that will be vibrant and appealing both day and night.
