One of the most famous living French architects, Jean Nouvel, already has experience building in vineyards on the outskirts of Bordeaux. While Nouvel tried to conceal the mass of the hotel Saint-James behind green-covered, corroded protrusions, in the case of the newly completed extension of the Château La Dominique winery in eastern Bordeaux, the red-colored metal strips shine from afar. The single-story building covers an area of 600 m² and is used for processing and storing the renowned grape variety from the local Saint-Emilion region. The extension consists of four parallel walls clad in narrow metal strips resembling restless blinds that reflect the red-colored sunlight in all directions. On the flat accessible roof, from where a panoramic view of the landscape is offered, visitors will find an art installation in the form of a “zen garden” covered with red glass pebbles referencing the pressed grapes.
