The winning proposal by Amsterdam architects Floor Arons and Arnoud Gelauff deals with the reconstruction of the waste silos in the Zeeburg suburb. By 2011, a new cultural center is set to be established in the renovated technical building, which will be named after the significant Dutch children's book author Annie MG Schmidt (1911-95).
The multifunctional building will also include apartments, a rooftop playground, and the restaurant Praq op 't daq. Exhibition spaces, a multimedia center, a cinema, a theater, shops, and restaurants will be open to visitors seven days a week. This unique revitalization of the dilapidated silos will help breathe new life into the entire residential area of Zeeburgereiland. Landscape architects Rob Aben and Janneke Hooymans also contributed to the final appearance of the project.
