Sydney/Prague - A giant sailboat anchored in the harbor, the spread wings of a large exotic bird, or loving turtles. All of this resembles the opera house with its cascade of shell-like formations, which stands majestically in the Sydney harbor and was opened exactly 35 years ago, on October 20, 1973. The extraordinary beauty of this visionary structure consumed an extraordinary amount of money: the original budget of seven million rose to 102 million Australian dollars.
The inspiration for the architect of the work, Danish Jørn Utzon, reportedly came from motifs from the natural world. In particular, the feeling he took away from visiting the Mayan plateaus in Mexico. The design was already deemed genius during the architectural competition. Although the author was prematurely removed from the project due to political changes, which affected the interior's design, the Sydney opera was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list last year.
