Today marks 60 years since Brasília became the capital of Brazil on April 21, 1960, replacing Rio de Janeiro, which had been the capital since 1763. The young city was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
Brasília was built in just four years, thanks to the efforts of 70,000 people who worked on its construction. From land clearing, through the building of neighborhoods and roads, to the inauguration of the new city, only 41 months passed, or just under 4 years.
It was a long-held wish of Brazilians that was realized by the newly elected president of Czech descent, Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira.
Today, Brasília is home to about three million residents, placing it fourth in the ranking of the largest cities in the country. Since 2001, a metro system has been in operation here. In 2008, Brasília proudly held the title of American Capital of Culture.
Oscar Niemeyer, a Brazilian artist and national pride, who is recognized and admired worldwide, worked on the architecture of the capital. He was the "creator" of the dream of President Juscelino Kubitschek, who is of Czech descent – Brasília, the capital of Brazil. Niemeyer had a great protector in President Kubitschek, as he had worked with him during his time as mayor of Belo Horizonte.
To build the new metropolis, Niemeyer was brought in by Lúcio Costa, who won the competition with his well-known Plano Piloto.
The Association of Architects, z. s. collaborates with the Cabinet of Architecture, z. s. on the publication of a work about Brasília and its architecture, created primarily by the aforementioned Oscar Niemeyer. The book launch is planned to take place after this extraordinary period at Witernitz Villa during a meeting of architects and friends of architecture on the occasion of the 60th anniversary.
