New York - A week after the first residents moved into the building constructed on the site of the former World Trade Center in New York, window washers became stranded on a platform and had to be rescued by firefighters. During their ascent to the roof, one cable snapped, leaving two men hanging above the ground at the 68th floor level.
On the site of the former center, which collapsed in 2001 after a terrorist attack, a new skyscraper, One World Trade Center (WTC), has been built, which has 104 floors. It stands over 540 meters tall and is the tallest building in the USA. The first companies began moving in about a week ago.
The platform with window washers Juan Lopez and Juan Lizama tilted to a 75-degree angle after the cable broke. Both were harnessed and waited for rescue. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, and firefighters were on the scene in four minutes. Both men were rescued in just under two hours when a hole was cut into one of the windows. The area around the building was evacuated in case glass fell to the ground.
Architect Gary Hansen, who designed the skyscraper, happened to be on the opposite sidewalk at the time of the rescue. According to local media, he stated that three hoisting towers are installed on the roof, two of which support the cantilevered walkways and one is specifically designed to handle similar emergencies as the one on Wednesday.
