Dubai – Today, the gates of the World Expo 2020 opened to visitors in Dubai, which will last until the end of March next year. Almost 200 countries are exhibiting on an area double that of Monaco. Sixty of them built their own pavilions, including the Czech Republic. The theme of the Expo is the connection of ideas and the creation of the future. The exhibition has three sub-themes – sustainability, mobility, and opportunity. Each has its own pavilion; the one for sustainability is named Terra, and in this area, there is also the Czech pavilion called Czech Spring, the office of the Czech Republic's General Commissioner for participation in Dubai announced today.
The Expo's Director General, Rim Hashimi, expects that a large portion of the infrastructure and buildings created for the Expo will be preserved. "It never came into consideration to invest only for the exhibition; it was about building a new city, a city of the future. We committed that the structures created for the exhibition would not be demolished," she said in an interview with AFP. According to her, the sites will remain until 2040 and possibly 2050, serving the future city.
Once a fishing village, Dubai is now a regional hub for finance, transportation, and media, renowned for grand architectural projects. Hashimi stated that the Expo emphasizes technology and sustainability. According to her, the Emirates are particularly interested in projects related to climate, ecological, and agricultural technologies. These are concentrated in the Terra pavilion, which takes the form of a parabolic antenna. It is powered by 5,000 solar panels and recycles water.
The AP agency reports that the futuristic exhibition grounds are situated in an area that was a desert just a few months ago. Now there is a new metro station, and robots monitor visitors, scolding those who forget to wear masks.
AP also notes that the multi-million dollar pavilions, like most buildings in the Gulf countries, were built by poorly paid foreign workers.
In the American pavilion, which was funded by the United Arab Emirates when the USA had difficulties with financing, visitors can see a replica of the Falcon 9 rocket by Space X. Also on display is a copy of the Quran that belonged to President Thomas Jefferson, signaling according to AP how freedom of religion permeates American society.
China's pavilion, shaped like a lantern, showcases a multifunctional vehicle that, according to the Chinese automaker SAIC Motor, could one day function as a submarine or helicopter.
The Italian pavilion is covered with "ropes" made from two million plastic bottles, and the main attraction is a 3D replica of Michelangelo's David. Since public nudity is prohibited in the UAE and David is naked, visitors can view the statue either from a floor at eye level of the 5.2-meter tall statue or at its feet.
The UAE is presenting itself at the exhibition with a pavilion shaped like a falcon, inviting visitors to an environment of dunes made of orange sand and showcasing footage capturing the fifty-year history of the country.
