During the summer holidays, a second experimental pavilion has emerged on the campus of Stuttgart University. This compact wooden structure, composed of unique elements, was created thanks to the students of Stuttgart University, who, under the guidance of Achim Menges (ICD – Institute for Computational Design) and Jan Knippers (ITKE – Institute for Structural Concrete and Design), not only designed and planned the object but also built it by hand. The goal of the project was to explore the transfer of structural principles commonly found in nature into architectural design and subsequent computer-controlled production.
“The experimental building aims to investigate the potential of biological structures and their application in architectural design, concurrently with research into static, spatial, and material aspects. Attention was focused on the development of segmented construction based on geometrically different building components, which also allow for a high degree of adaptability and progression. Part of the study framework included the analysis of organic structures and the morphology of the skeletal remains of the so-called 'Sand dollar' (lat. Phylum Echinodermata, Czech Písečný dolar belonging to the animal class of sea urchins (Echinidea), whose relatives are sea urchins and starfish – note from the translator). The observed principles were then applied in the subsequent realization of the organic structure. The limestone shell of the 'sand dollar' is composed of a series of polygonal plates with a unique geometric arrangement. The interconnection of the individual plates creates a highly complex structure. For this reason, the 'sand dollar' could serve as a prototype for prefabricated formwork.”
