Washington - The administration of American President Barack Obama dashed the hopes of Star Wars fans across the galaxy on Friday by rejecting a petition demanding the construction of the Death Star, a destructive space base featured in the famous sci-fi films.
"The administration shares your wish to create jobs and ensure a strong defense for the country, but building a Death Star is not on the horizon," said Paul Shawcross, head of the space and science division of the White House Office of Management and Budget.
"However, the administration does not support the destruction of planets," Shawcross added, referring to the activity that the Death Star performs in the Star Wars stories.
The White House promised to respond to online petitions that garner at least 25,000 signatures within a month. Most petitions concern serious political issues, but in recent weeks, bizarre petitions have attracted public attention, such as the proposal to mint a platinum coin worth one trillion dollars (19.2 trillion crowns) to avoid a government default or to construct the spaceship Enterprise, known from the sci-fi television series Star Trek.
The petition advocating for the Death Star, signed by over 34,000 people, argues that the project would create jobs and bolster national security. However, it would obviously be too expensive at a time when the U.S. government is trying to reduce the country's debt.
"The construction of the Death Star would estimate to cost over 850 quadrillion dollars. We are working hard to reduce the deficit, not to enlarge it," Shawcross added.
