Venice - The Venetian city hall will replace the glass surface of the stairs on the bridge over the Canal Grande, an important transport artery of the city. Due to the slippery surface of the structure, Venice had to pay compensation of about 60,000 euros (over 1.5 million CZK) to thousands of injured tourists and locals. This was reported today by the DPA agency.

Around 5,000 people requested compensation from the city hall of this lagoon city. The renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, who designed the bridge and has designed more than 40 bridges around the world, suggested shortly after the bridge's opening in September 2008 to use trachyte for the stairs.

The structure, costing 11 million euros (almost 284 million CZK), connects Santa Lucia station with the bus station. It was the first bridge built in Venice in over 70 years and its expensive maintenance has sparked controversy.

Recently, an exhibition at the House at the Stone Bell presented the work of the Spanish architect in the Czech Republic. The installation showcased Calatrava's large-format paintings and kinetic and abstract sculptures along with architectural models of some of his most famous projects, including the transportation terminal of the World Trade Center in New York, the Dubai Tower, which is set to become the tallest building in the world, and the pavilion of the United Arab Emirates for the Expo 2020 exhibition in Dubai.
