Antonín Raymond

The Architecture Gallery Brno, together with the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery, presents an exhibition dedicated to the famous architect of Czech origin, Antonín Raymond, who gained worldwide recognition primarily in Europe, America, and Asia.

The Kladno native Antonín Raymond is among the most interesting Czech architects of the 20th century. In Japan, he is even considered the founder of modern architecture. He began his career in Casse Gilbert's studio during the construction of the first skyscraper in New York, and later served as an assistant to Frank Lloyd Wright in Tokyo during the construction of the famous Imperial Hotel. This renowned building survived the devastating earthquake in 1923, which ensured architects' fame; Raymond was one of the first to build with reinforced concrete. The architect established his own studio in 1921 (the office is still active, led by Raymond's student Shigefumi R. Tsuchiya). He also collaborated with other Czechs who traveled to Japan – Bedřich Feuerstein and Jan Josef Švagr. In 1946, he founded a joint office with another Czechoslovak, Ladislav Leland Rad. The architect's lifelong support was his wife, artist Noémi, who, in addition to her own studio work, also contributed to Raymond's projects.

The exhibition at the Architecture Gallery Brno will present an incredibly rich range of expressions through selected buildings in Japan and the Philippines, and will familiarize visitors with an equally rich and adventurous fate. Raymond left for the USA while still studying architecture at the technical university in Prague, and later began designing in Japan. During World War I, he was an officer in the intelligence service, and from 1926 he also served as honorary consul in Tokyo. In 1937, he returned to the USA and visited his siblings in Czechoslovakia on the way. That was the last time he saw them; the Jewish Reimann family did not survive the Holocaust.
In the long list of his work, we also find a realization in the Philippines, which, along with other buildings in Japan, is presented in photographs, videos, plans, and models. The spectacular installation is complemented by plans, drawings, artifacts, and interiors from Raymond's buildings designed by both spouses as well as architect Bedřich Feuerstein. Visitors can get an idea of the current form and scale of implementations through the projection of several parts of the series "Šumné stopy" by Antonín Raymond, Bedřich Feuerstein, Jan Josef Švagr, and Raymond's successors.

The exhibition will be opened on Tuesday, December 15, 2015, at 6.00 PM by David Vávra, Irena Veverková, and Dan Merta at the Architecture Gallery Brno, Starobrněnská 18.

The exhibition will be open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM until January 29, 2016. Admission to the exhibition is voluntary.

After the presentation in Brno is completed, the exhibition will become the basis for a permanent exhibition in Raymond's hometown of Kladno. Currently, there are also discussions about a reprise of the exhibition in Tokyo.
