Exhibition Alvar Aalto - Second Nature

This autumn will offer a number of interesting exhibitions in the fields of architecture and design that will attract visitors to European cities. One of them is the exhibition of Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), the co-founder of the Artek brand, which will take place at the Vitra Design Museum near Basel, Switzerland. Aalto is a world-renowned furniture designer and the author of several unique buildings such as the Paimio Sanatorium and Villa Mairea in Finland, which captivate with their unusual manipulation of forms and materials. The exhibition "Alvar Aalto - Second Nature" presents a contemporary view of Aalto's work, which has influenced the development of modern furniture. The exhibition features Aalto's iconic pieces inspired by Finnish nature and landscape. Each exhibition space maps a different part of the architect's life and work; the first room focuses on Aalto's life, the second follows the development, tendencies, and relationship with contemporary artists, another looks at Aalto as a designer of furniture, lighting, and glass objects, and the last is dedicated to the post-war period and Aalto's major construction projects. Visitors will also have the opportunity to see original sketches and handwritten notes and drawings for the first time.
The accompanying program of the exhibition offers numerous lectures and panel discussions with architects from various parts of the world. The exhibition takes place at the Vitra Design Museum with the support of the Alvar Aalto Museum from September 27, 2014, to March 1, 2015.
