Adolf Loos

Unpublished photographs and a standalone look at the life story of Adolf Loos's last wife, the father of modern architecture, are presented in the exhibition Klára Becková - Loosová, witness of an epoch, which will be installed from June 5 to August 31 2017 at the Old Synagogue in Pilsen. It will be accessible every day from 10 AM to 6 PM, except for Saturdays and Jewish holidays.
“This is a literary exhibition, prepared under the auspices of the Pilsen Center of West Bohemian Writers (SZS), as Klára was not only a woman surrounded by the writers of her time but also a literary author of a valuable portrait of the famous architect,” describes the project chairwoman of the SZS, Markéta Čekanová. “Thanks to the Beck and Paterson families from the USA, we are also exhibiting several unpublished photographs, one of which will show visitors Klára's and Loos's dog Beau – Beau,” adds the exhibition author David Růžička, who used Klára's book Adolf Loos: A Private Portrait as the basis for the exhibition. Klára Becková – Loosová was born in 1904 in Pilsen into a Jewish family. She died in early 1942 in a concentration camp in Riga.
Visitors to the exhibition will walk through Klára’s childhood, her acquaintance with architect Loos, their turbulent breakup, and the sad fate that this Pilsen native, writer, and photographer shared with the community of European Jews, through photographs and accompanying texts.
“We can say that Loos was a direct trigger for Klára's literary ambitions,” states David Růžička. Thanks to Loos, Klára also met a number of global personalities, writers, painters, musicians, and filmmakers who also appear in the exhibition.
Thanks for the assistance with the exhibition goes not only to the Beck and Paterson families from the USA, but also to the Museum of the Capital City of Prague, especially to Marie Szadkowská, curator of the Müller Villa and her colleagues, the owner and savior of the Brummel House Mr. Michal Brummel, the rescuer of Richard Hirsch's apartment Mr. Vladimír Lekeš, and many others who contributed with advice, help, or specific materials.

A guided tour of the exhibition recalling the book and the fates of Adolf Loos's last wife will take place on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at 4:00 PM in the Old Synagogue in Pilsen.
