What message should contemporary architecture embody, was captured by the Czech architecture theorist Dalibor Veselý: "an architectural work is an articulation and embodiment of human experience of the world". What is today's experience, what themes does it open up? There are many, but undoubtedly we can include the relationship of architecture to limited energy and material resources, the relationship between the present and the past, detail and authenticity of the idea. The exhibition East Side Architecture/ Contemporary Architecture in Eastern Slovakia is a project that has been developing for more than four years, initially as a spontaneous architectural happening, later as an original outdoor exhibition, until it culminated in a relatively extensive book and exhibition concept. The focus is on a selection of around forty architectural realizations, mainly from the first decade of the new millennium. The selection does not aim to extract regional specifics or seek a locally anchored identity. The main content should be perceived as a factual document on the current condition of architecture in eastern Slovakia. A wide spectrum of typological types, including family and apartment houses, libraries, schools, religious buildings, galleries, sports halls, or even landscape viewpoints, is illustrated by large colorful photographs, graphic documentation, and pictograms, which are visual shortcuts for selected objects. Visual materials are accompanied by rich factual data. An additional layer is a series of loosely arranged essays by a quartet of invited authors, who reflect on the topic of Eastern Slovak architectural production from various perspectives. The current exhibition at the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery will offer an unconventional view of architecture, photography, and stage design. A massive illuminated levitating object will draw the visitor into an unconventional world of contemporary architectural fairy tales somewhere on the edge of Eastern Europe. The fact that architecture is alive in the east is also demonstrated by the current selection of four top realizations from Slovakia nominated for the European Prize for Architecture - Mies van der Rohe Award, with two of the four buildings being from Košice.
