The Museum of Applied and Contemporary Art in Vienna (MAK) opens the exhibition HOLLEIN on June 24, dedicated to the recently deceased Austrian architect and designer Hollein (* March 30, 1934 Vienna; † April 24, 2014 Vienna), a postmodern artist. Hans Hollein was not only a significant Austrian architect and designer, but also a curator, theorist, teacher, and cultural anthropologist. For his work, he was awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize for Architecture in 1985.
The retrospective exhibition HOLLEIN, organized by MAK in cooperation with the University of Applied Arts Vienna, showcases not only well-known Hollein works but also previously unpublished works from Hollein’s own studio, which he founded in 1964. A new perspective on Hans Hollein's work is offered by a series of photographs by two contemporary Austrian artists, Aglaia Konrad and Armin Linke, created specifically for the HOLLEIN exhibition. The photographs capture the most significant Hollein architectural projects, highlighting the development of Hollein's work over the past fifty years. Notable museum buildings include the Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach (1982), the Museum of Modern Art in Frankfurt (1991), the Museum of Glass and Ceramics in Tehran (1978), and the French Vulcania (2002). Hollein's architectural works are also well-known in the very center of the Austrian capital, Vienna. Examples include the former candle shop Retti (now Y.Gadner jewelry, 1965), the CM boutique (1967), and the former Schullin jewelry store (1974).
