On Thursday, May 26th at 15:15, the Pavilion of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic, featuring the project Care for Architecture: Asking the Arché of Architecture to Dance, will be opened to professional audiences and the media at the 15th International Biennale of Architecture in Venice 2016. The authors' team selected by the jury to represent Slovakia at this year's architecture biennale decided to present the story of one building, the Slovak National Gallery (further information about the project can be found in the authors' statement and in their project description, which are annexed to the press release).
The winning project was selected in January by a seven-member international jury led by Adam Gebrian (CZ). From the statement, we quote: "... in our opinion, this is one of the few buildings from recent history in Slovakia that has the potential to attract a wide international audience. It is not just about presenting the building in a large model [at a scale of 1:17.78], but about presenting the entire process: from considerations about the creation of this building, through its preparation, various phases of the project, realization, use, subsequent decay, discussions about closure and possible demolition, to the competition proposals from various Slovak architects for reconstruction. The struggle for this building is an intersection of many front lines, both architectural and non-architectural."
This project was developed in collaboration with the studio of Peter Hájek and Vít Halada, and the studio of Ján Studený with Benjamin Brádňanský (Department of Architectural Creation at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design) and architectural theorist Marián Zervan (Department of Theory and History of Art at Trnava University and AFAD). It further developed in collaboration with the exhibition curator for the Slovak National Gallery, architectural theorist Monika Mitášová (Department of Theory and History of Art at TU). The authors also presented the project at a press conference at the Slovak National Gallery on May 19, 2016, alongside works by invited artists exhibited in the pavilion, which address the site or building of the SNG.
The general public can view the Biennale from May 28 to November 27, 2016.
