Brno - The works of promising young artists who are competing for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award are being exhibited from today at the Brno House of Art. An international jury will select a single winner from the six finalists on November 16, the same day it will announce its verdict. The award is associated with a prize of 100,000 crowns and an internship in the United States. For the final exhibition, the jury selected from 42 artists. "The criterion is singular and simple: to find the best artist under 35. There are no other conditions," said Tomáš Pospiszyl from the organizing Jindřich Chalupecký Society to journalists today. All exhibited works were created for the final award; artists worked on them over the past five months. "This year's installation is impressive and makes excellent use of the space," believes the director of the House of Art, Radek Horáček. People in the galleries will find works by finalists Barbora Klímová, Jan Jakub Kotík, Dominik Lang, Dušan Skala, and Tomáš Svoboda. For the second time in the finals is the group Rafani, which, however, did not prepare any work in traditional form. Its members are preparing warm beverages and food or playing music in front of the House of Art and are planning other events as well. "We are trying to get rid of written expression. Only actions will remain," said one of the Rafans, Marek Meduna, to ČTK. The departure from traditional media is characteristic of all the artists in the competition. "Last year the artists were a bit older; in this edition, we are dealing with a young generation that thinks differently than the previous ones. No painter is represented here; artists are expressing themselves more in conceptual language," added Pospiszyl. The final exhibition of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award alternates between Prague and Brno. Young artists are at the House of Art for the third time already. The first laureate was Vladimír Kokolia in 1990; later, the award was given to figures such as František Skála or David Černý; last year, Kateřina Šedá won.
