The Active House Award competition, organized since 2012 by VELUX, was announced this year for the first time as an international competition for university students from Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. This year's theme "Rethink Suburbs" draws attention to the current issue in many countries – searching for the usability of existing structures in rural and suburban areas rather than automatically creating new developments. The task for students was to design an efficient use of a spacious rural house and its reconstruction with the goal of creating an so-called active house. The basis was a real object – an older house in the Austrian village of Wolkersdorf im Weinviertel on the outskirts of Vienna.
The five-member jury included Czech and foreign experts – Dr. Peter Holzer from the Austrian Institute of Building Research & Innovation, architect Štefan Polakovič from the Slovak studio Gutgut, and Dipl. architect Martin Stuber from Switzerland. One of the jury members representing the Czech Republic was also Adam Gebrian, an architect and a prominent theorist and critic of architecture.
Klára Bukolská, an architect at VELUX, who was also part of the jury, appreciated the strong participation of students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia: "We were very pleased that university students from Slovakia and the Czech Republic had balanced participation and brought solutions that best responded to the competition's task. The students presented a number of concepts on how to work with life in existing structures, as well as how to better utilize their property. It is necessary to highlight the comprehensive approach to solving the entire issue in the winning projects and the thinking in contexts, as the students addressed not only their own house but also its surroundings."
