Znojmo - Znojmo will announce an architectural competition together with the Czech Chamber of Architects for the design of a fountain in the Upper Square, which has been discussed for several years. Architects can submit their proposals until May 6, and on June 18 the city intends to present the winner along with other designs, stated city hall spokeswoman Zuzana Pastrňáková in a press release.
The fountain is intended to enhance the experience of spending time in the square, especially in the summer. "In the hot summer months, it's really unbearable in the square, which is why we would like to make this area more attractive. We also wanted to add greenery, however, heritage conservationists repeatedly do not allow it," said Mayor Jan Grois (ČSSD).
According to the city hall leadership, the proposal should take into account that various cultural events take place in the square throughout the year. "Its interaction with visitors is desirable; ideally, some modern technologies should be used," stated Deputy Mayor Jakub Malačka (ČSSD).
The jury will include members of the city leadership along with architects, a heritage conservationist, and a water technology expert.
The square was renovated at the beginning of this decade, and in 2010 a design for the fountain was even selected, resembling a royal crown. It was created by architects Ludvík Grym and Jindřich Škrabal. However, the city leadership that came in after the 2010 elections did not address the issue of the fountain.
