Studio of Marián Karl - aims to track a significant intellectual and formal shift that has occurred in design and its education over the last half century.
We understand industrial design as a higher education discipline of artistic nature encompassing a wide range of practical design from product design, machines, and tools to spatial design, influenced by the principles of quality free spatial art. We would like to focus on the production and use of flat glass /in architecture/, optical glass, basic glass craftsmanship techniques, production and use of glass fibers and other latest technologies in collaboration with other research workplaces at ČVUT. The second pillar of the studio topics is formal and spatial design from furniture design, sculptures, landscaping to compositions in space. We are particularly interested in the possibility of collaboration between designer and architect. Our goal is to expand students' perception so that they do not see their designs just as standalone design objects but perceive them in all contexts, including their placement and definition within architecture. Some topics also touch on authorship, conceptual design at the edge of fine art, extending to critically focused design.
The studio topics range from utilitarian and glass products to spatial or interactive installations. /Interactive Installation What if architecture-design responded to our presence?
Topic: Transformation in relation to time /the course of the day, different seasons, brightness/ Topic: Digital music Topic of the product: Working with spatial relationships Topic: Artificial nature - exploring natural principles, macro and micro scales /from spider webs to microstructures of materials - inspiration/ Topic: Interactive object - innovative grasp of principles of physics and dynamics, traditionally known natural laws, mechanics... applications
Possibility to develop the topic into interactive design /collaboration with the Institute of Intermedia and students of FEL - new projection, interactive technologies/
TOPICS OF THE WINTER SEMESTER 2012/13: Organization / arrangement, classification, sorting, positioning in space
Comment from the jury: We award the Lead Dušan to the studio led by Prof. Marian Karl for its truly unique pedagogical approach, which was evident in every student work and the clear corresponding form of project presentation. In this studio, we find the ideal substance of strong concepts, invention, innovation, courage to experiment, and the ability to reflect interesting topics – organization, dividing wall.
Seat "SANO" | Mirek Hušek Studio Šulc III.
This chair is designed for use in so-called short-term seating due to its low backrest in the lumbar area. Therefore, it is ideally suited for use in restaurants, cafes, or patisseries. Thus, everywhere where it is necessary to sit comfortably but not to linger for long. Support only in the lumbar area ensures quality seating with a reinforced upper part of the back. When seated incorrectly, the chair becomes uncomfortable. It is a type of armchair with a bent backrest transitioning into armrests. The frame of the chair is made of solid beech, while the seat is made of shaped beech plywood. The height of the backrest above the seat is approximately 190mm. By bending and gradually tilting the backrest, its correct slope and simultaneously comfortable armrests, which gradually rise forwards, are created. The finish for the black chair is done with water-based stain followed by three layers of dispersive lacquer, while the white one is finished with nitrocellulose enamel. The chair is overall low, so its advantage is the possibility of being pushed under the table. Stackability is a given, either by inserting a maximum of 3 pieces into one another or stacking them on top of each other.
Comment from the jury:
It is hard to say what I was looking for in the evaluation criteria; I was simply after the most utilitarian, what I liked. Whether the chair is cold, colorful, wooden, or if it sits well was no longer so important to me. The only thing that cannot fundamentally be criticized is that I might find it from Brindisi to Stockholm.
The author of the chair relies on traditional manufacturing technologies from the 19th century and reliably tested shapes. However, this fact seems to us happily used in this digital age. The geometry of the chair consists of several excellently utilized structural elements. Sano offers a new look at seating in a cafe: it straightens a person's back and - which is excellent - it is stackable. Among other things, we appreciate the perfect graphic presentation of the design and excellent execution of prototypes in white and black color.
