1st prize - 745,000 CZK Author: Rusina Frei, s.r.o., Ing. arch. Markéta Poláčková, Ing. arch. Johana Šohájková, Ing. arch. MgA. Martin Rusina, Ing. arch. Martin Frei Jury evaluation: The jury was convinced by the clarity and simplicity of the urban planning solution for the entire Komenského Square, extending Chelčického Street all the way to the park area of the square. The transport concept with a pedestrian zone on the southern side of the square in front of the school entrance is suitable for the area. The building is divided by Chelčického Street into two separate structures. The taller school building is oriented towards the park area of the square, while the lower gym has a separate entrance for the public into the more urban central part, in front of the residential building. The gym is connected to the school by an underground corridor. The school's footprint is an irregular "H" shape, where two unevenly tall and deep “logs” descending towards the south are connected by a neck with an outdoor terraced staircase - a grandstand, a slide, and a roof terrace area. The neck with the function of a library divides the area between the buildings into two separate school courtyards. Due to the proposed terrain modifications, these courtyards are not accessible to the public, but still offer visual contact with the surroundings. A positive aspect is the orientation of the cafeteria on the ground floor towards the gym and the park. The generous width of the corridors and good work with their profile, connection to the terrain, respiratory areas, or diverse roof terraces accessible from each floor of the building, the intimacy of semi-courtyards, and the stimulating atmosphere... all contributed to the unanimous choice of the winning proposal. The gym with a covered outdoor grandstand along the sports area, autonomous access for the public, or underground parking under the gym that is not connected to the school building and thus does not reduce school safety, are other positives of the proposal. In terms of architectural design, the massing appears natural to the square, and the more dynamic school building highlights the main entrance to the school. The gym is single-story towards the square with a glazed facade allowing visual contact. Its height eliminates shading of the nearby residential buildings. The building utilizes modern technologies of timber construction and green roofs. Even though the massing solution is less compact, it does not significantly affect the energy characteristics of the building. The zoning of the building is correctly designed. In terms of energy efficiency concept, it is an above-average proposal, criticized only for its high degree of glazing.
2nd prize - 413,000 CZK Author: Anta spol. s r.o., Ing. arch. Barbora Kopřivová, Dipl. Ing. Bořek Němec, Ing. arch. Richard Zacpal, Ing. arch. Karel Scheib Jury evaluation: The proposal clearly defines the southern edge of the square by connecting to the building line. It functionally divides the square into individual zones and consciously orients the school towards the open parkland in its eastern part. The transport concept enabling good accessibility of the area while maintaining a safe calm area in front of the school is positively evaluated. By shifting the main entrance to the school from the central part of the square towards the peaceful part of the park, it reduces the traffic burden on the square. However, by placing the main entrance to the school through the entrance piazzetta, the proposal gives up the possibility of orienting the school as an iconic public building directly to the square – as a counterpoint to the gymnasium building. The location of the building in close proximity to the care service building seems problematic regarding setbacks. The clear variable layout with generous internal common areas, allowing the use of modern teaching methods, is highly valued. The proposal is very refined and has been graphically well processed; however, its architectural expression has been somewhat harmed by artistic stylization. Despite some reservations, which can be removed in later stages of the project documentation (better integration of the long northern facade of the school into the public space of the central part of the square, issues related to fire safety solutions), this is a quality proposal recommended by the jury for further discussion. In terms of energy efficiency concept, it is a neutral proposal; the proposed structural system should be evaluated for thermal insulation requirements and airtightness, and the high degree of glazing and solar shading system should also be optimized.
3rd prize - 247,000 CZK Author: Ing. arch. Vojtěch Ružbatský, Ing. arch. Filip Rašek, Ing. arch. Josef Choc, MgA. Ondřej Císler Jury evaluation: The school building is confidently placed in the urban context. It enhances the urban character of the central part of Komenského Square while simultaneously creating a connection with its eastern park area. The extension of Chelčického Street is favorable. From the perspective of overall traffic solutions in the area, a calm passage along the southern edge of the square in front of the school building would be appropriate, which the proposal could enable. The opinion on the overall solution of Komenského Square is very sophisticated. However, the small setback from the care service building on Třebízského Street is problematic; the jury discussed the height of the southern facade of the school in relation to the family houses. The spatial arrangement around the schoolyard is clear and unambiguous. However, the suitability of such clarity for a school of the 21st century can be a subject of discussion. The compact layout is an advantage for school operations. The connection of changing rooms to the outdoor sports facility across the street is problematic. The solutions for the facades and interiors of the school are of a high standard, while exposed beam ceilings without visible air conditioning ducts tend to manifest the concept rather than depict reality. In terms of energy concept, due to its very compact shape, it is one of the best proposals, although it contains partial shortcomings - the positions of windows in the facade plane do not allow installation of external shading elements without altering the visual impact, and the size of the windows should also be optimized. The chosen structural system is untested in our conditions for a comparable building and would require very careful project preparation. Overall, it is a very refined, elaborate, and confident proposal that, after further refinement, is suitable for realization.
Award - 82,500 CZK Author: Ing. Jaroslav Havelka, Ing. arch. Tomáš Havelka Jury evaluation: The jury was attracted by the urban concept. The proposed buildings firmly determine the southern front of the square and define its space. The proposal for the placement of multifunctional city buildings demonstrates an understanding of the need to manage developable areas within the city. The school building, through its bend, creates an entrance space - thus reacting appropriately to a similar community center concept and could become an iconic place. The organization of traffic and parking spaces throughout the square is realistic and also allows for potential addition of a passage in front of the school building. However, the junction for the passage and two entrances to the underground garages could often be overloaded. The outdoor spaces of the school are not suitably arranged and are bisected by a passage from Chelčického Street. The school has a complicated layout. The effect of tension between relatively narrow corridors and rich extensions is appealing but leads to confusion. The cafeteria - auditorium is accessible from the ground floor only through an outdoor space, and from other floors only via a single staircase, and its shape is unsuitable. The proposal anticipates too low a structural height. The degree of glazing on the southern and eastern sides is high, and solar shading is not specified. The absence of ventilation and air conditioning would be contrary to the grant program's requirements. Automatic window openings according to CO2 levels are not functional and are user-unfriendly.
Award - 82,500 CZK Author: SOA architekti, s.r.o., Ing. Štefan Šulek, Ing. arch. Ondřej Píhrt Jury evaluation: Despite the evident effort to define the southern side of Komenského Square in the proposal, the urban planning solution has significant weaknesses. The entrance piazzetta weakens the central part of the square. The composition of volumes does not contribute to a desirable brightening of the urban structure, as it is difficult to find a relationship with the existing surrounding buildings. The school thus appears more as a solitary entity in a park. In terms of the overall traffic solution in the area, a calm passage along the southern edge of the square in front of the school building would be appropriate. The jury questions the suitability of concentrated surface parking regarding the quality of public spaces. Chelčického Street remains a dead end. The layout and aesthetic solution of the proposal is of a high standard and creates an inspiring environment for the school of the future. The clustered principle of organizing classrooms allows flexibility in teaching methods. The division of the school into first and second stages as well as details such as the proportions of classrooms, supplementary teaching spaces, and communication areas are adequate and appear natural. Another value of the proposal is the connection between the interior and the exterior and the use of the site’s slope. In terms of energy concept, this is one of the best proposals.
