Roudnice nad Labem – The Czech Railways today presented the winning architectural-urban design for the high-speed rail terminal (VRT) near Roudnice nad Labem in the Litoměřice region. The winners from the Rusina Frei Architects office tried to take into account especially the dominant feature of the landscape, the Říp hill, they told journalists today. The terminal is expected to cost about 1.3 billion crowns and is to be built by 2030.
Ten proposals were submitted to the competition, including two from abroad. The assignment also included a requirement for a design of a service base, which will be the center for the maintenance of the railway infrastructure for the entire VRT Podřipsko section.
Architects, urban planners, and other experts have been seeking a solution for the transfer hub since September of last year. However, for the architectural office, winning the competition is just the beginning of their work. "We will now continue negotiations with the Czech Railways regarding the contract, and then we will proceed with the delivery of the study and the project for the zoning decision," architect Martin Frei told ČTK today.
In addition to independent experts and representatives of the Czech Railways, municipal representatives also sat on the jury. The jury appreciated that the winning project maintains a connection with the landscape and surroundings despite its modern technical solution. According to Frei, the architects also wanted to create a building where travelers can easily orient themselves.
According to the architects, the terminal should be accessible by public transport, car, train, or bicycle. "Most terminals we know of are placed parallel to the railway. We chose a concept where we place the hall into a bridge that spans the railway," explained bridge construction expert Petr Tej about the project’s design.
Mayor of Roudnice František Padělek (BEZPP) said today that the historic center of the city is already very burdened with traffic. It is not spared even by heavy vehicles. He expressed concern that the construction of the terminal would bring more cars into the heritage zone. According to him, the solution is to build a bypass.
