Prague - In the competition for the construction of a monument to Master Jan Hus at Krakovec Castle, 14 proposals were submitted. The opening of the envelopes is scheduled for Tuesday, and after the New Year, the expert jury is expected to recommend the winning form of Hus's statue, said Klára Zubíková, head of the cultural and heritage department of the regional office, today to ČTK. Hus was active in the Rakovnicko region at the time he was declared a heretic and expelled from Prague. The monument dedicated to him is planned to be unveiled by the regional government next year on July 6 during the traditional commemoration of the anniversary of Hus's martyrdom. According to the deputy governor Marcel Chládek (ČSSD), the winner of the competition should be known by the end of January at the latest, so that the monument can be built by summer. "The ceiling amount is two million crowns for everything, which includes installation and all other permits and similar expenses. The statue should cost up to one million crowns," said Chládek. According to Zubíková, the competition is anonymous, so she could not yet reveal if any well-known artists have applied. According to her, the region wants to present all the proposals to the public later, and the exhibition could take place in the Rabas Gallery in Rakovník. Jan Hus criticized church practices in his sermons and demanded a return to a poor church, for which he earned an excommunication. Before the conciliar court in Constance, he refused to retract his teachings, and as a heretic, he was therefore burned at the stake. His death strengthened the reform movement in the Czech lands, which grew into the Hussite Revolution. Krakovec Castle was Hus's last refuge before his departure to the Council of Constance, where he was to defend his reformist views; however, he was imprisoned instead and burned on July 6, 1415.
