Tábor – Tábor has prepared an architectural competition for the design of a parking garage on the site of the former synagogue. The cost of constructing the multi-storey building is approximately 350 million crowns. The winner of the competition will be known in the summer of next year. The current city council will leave the next steps to the new city leadership that will emerge from the municipal elections in the fall of 2022. This was stated today by the mayor of Tábor, Štěpán Pavlík.
"We are not putting the future city council in a position where it must build the parking garage at all costs. We will conclude the process at the end of the competition, and the rest should be addressed after the autumn elections," said Pavlík. The parking garage is to be located near the center. Its design will be determined by a number of aspects, including, for example, geological surveys of the subsoil. "It will show us whether we can build three underground floors or just two," the mayor noted. The capacity of the parking garage, which has been discussed for several years, is 300 cars.
According to the mayor, the new building should also meet certain aesthetic parameters. "We aim not to just fill the space with a mere empty mass. Because the place where the synagogue stood deserves a sensitive approach," said Pavlík.
He previously stated that the building should also clearly refer to history. The new Tábor synagogue from the 19th century was built in an Oriental style. It served for worship until the Second World War, after which it became a warehouse. Officials from the past regime had the building demolished in 1977. Now, in its place, there is a parking lot on the empty lot in front of Hotel Dvořák. A memorial plaque has commemorated the synagogue since 1992.
