The seventeenth edition of the student competition King of Daylight has moved to the online space. The competition in designing buildings with plenty of daylight and fresh air has not lost any of its attractiveness. Evidence of this is the record interest in educational webinars.
The high school competition King of Daylight 2021, announced and organized by VELUX Czech Republic, s.r.o., is moving into the second phase after a successful series of student webinars. Students from secondary industrial construction schools are beginning to work on their projects.
The aim of the competition is to teach the youngest generation to design buildings that are well-lit, easily ventilated, and pleasant to live in. Just like in previous years, this year, the students' task is to design a building where daylight and fresh air come through the roof via VELUX products. The proposed solution must also be energy-efficient and ensure a permanently optimal indoor environment for healthy and comfortable use. The competition is announced in two categories: Family House and Freestyle – any type of building.
Students can work on their projects and consult them with their teachers until May 3rd, when the deadline for submitting competition proposals is set. A condition for participation is registration of the student here, which is only possible until April 2nd, 2021.
The submitted works in both categories will then be evaluated by an expert jury. Participants will learn the names of the winners and receive feedback on individual projects at the festive announcement of results, which will take place on June 9th, 2021.
There was great interest in the expert webinars
The popular expert trainings at the VELUX Competence Center in Brno were replaced by online webinars this year. Students and teachers have become accustomed to the online format after a year of distance learning, so everything went smoothly. A total of 447 students from secondary industrial construction schools across the Czech Republic took part. In addition to lectures, webinar participants could compete for prizes in a quiz and quickly learned to use tools that would help them in designing their competition projects.
Another new feature this year that will ease the submission of projects for students is a new tool for easy registration. "In this registration system, students create their profile and upload their competition work here. It's very simple and intuitive, so students can easily manage it," says Marek Petrík, an architect at VELUX.
The last edition of the King of Daylight competition in 2020 involved 220 high school students from across the Czech Republic. A total of 65 projects from students of 16 secondary industrial construction schools advanced to the national round.
The course of the competition remains unchanged
Apart from the fact that all meetings are held online, the course of this year's King of Daylight competition does not change in any way. The student competition is again divided into two rounds. In the first school round, teachers from each participating construction secondary school will select one to three best works from their students. Their authors will receive not only a tangible prize worth 1500 CZK but also advancement to the national round. The jury composed of a school representative and a VELUX representative has the right to additionally award a "wild card" to a project at its discretion.
In the national round, an expert jury composed of two independent jurors and one representative of VELUX will evaluate the competition works and decide on the winners in both competition categories.
Prizes in the national round
Family House Category 1st prize: 15,000 CZK + prize for the project supervisor
Freestyle Category – any type of building 1st prize: 10,000 CZK + prize for the project supervisor
In addition to the main prizes, the jury will distribute additional prizes worth a total of 40,000 CZK. Each project supervisor whose project is awarded in the national round will receive a tangible prize worth 5,000 CZK. The first three schools with the highest number of submitted works will share 20,000 CZK among themselves.
