Ostrava - The Grand Prix award in the Moravian-Silesian Region 2007 construction competition was awarded to the Roman Catholic Church in Ostrava-Zábřeh, designed by architect Marek Štěpán from Brno. The Church of the Holy Spirit also won the main prize in the category of civic amenities, where it shares the first place with the reconstruction of the train station building in Ostrava-Svinov. Among the 35 registered buildings, the public favored the family house in Opava-Kylešovice designed by architect David Wittas from Opava.
The winners of the second year of the regional competition were ceremoniously announced today at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre in Ostrava. Architects, designers, and builders competed in five categories; they could register buildings completed and approved last year and the year before.
In addition to civic amenities, an eleven-member jury also selected among family houses. The main prize was awarded to a new building in Chvalíkovice in the Opava region by local architect Tomáš Bindr. In the category of apartment buildings, the metaphorical gold went to the Lara apartment house in Čeladná in the Frýdek-Místek region. The winning industrial building was a center for aircraft repairs in Mošnov in the Nový Jičín region. In the category of transportation, engineering, and water management constructions, the suspended bridge on the D47 highway over the Odra River and Antošovické Lake was the winner.
A special jury award was given to the reconstruction of the main building of the city swimming pool in Opava, a cultural monument built in the 1930s. A new feature of the second year was the award for unconventional thesis work. The Dean's Award of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the VSB - Technical University of Ostrava was awarded to Petr Kozár, who developed the topic of Passive Family House.
In determining the winners, the expert jury evaluated the overall architectural expression of the building and its integration into the surroundings. The quality of construction work, appropriate use of materials, originality, social purpose of the building, and impact on the environment were also important, stated jury chairman Milan Balabán.
"We believe that the number of registered buildings will increase every year. For example, in Britain, minor projects compete with large constructions. It's about the courage and self-confidence of investors from the entire region," added Pavel Ševčík, head of the Ostrava branch of the Association of Entrepreneurs in Construction.
Last year, in the first year of the competition, the Grand Prix was awarded to the auditorium and information technology center of the VSB - TU in Ostrava-Poruba. The public appreciated the Koma parking house in front of the Svinov train station. In five categories, the main prize was awarded, for example, to the reconstruction of the Ostrava City Library, apartment buildings in the squares in Krnov in the Bruntál region, or the reconstruction of the bus station in Hlučín in the Opava region.
