Ostrava - In the Moravian-Silesian Region, the competition for the best building has been held for the third year. Architects, designers, builders, and owners can enter new constructions as well as renovated buildings that were completed and approved during 2007 and 2008. Applications can be submitted until mid-March, available at www.stavbamsk.cz. A professional jury will select winners in five categories. This was reported by the competition spokesperson Vendula Honová. Registered buildings can win in the categories of family and residential houses, civic amenities, and industrial buildings. The fifth category includes transportation, engineering, and water management constructions. In each category, the jury will award a main prize and two honorary mentions, but it can also award two first prizes or a special prize for the impact of the building on the environment. Among the individual winners, only one will receive the highest award, the Grand Prix. The Moravian-Silesian Region Construction Competition 2008 has the traditional goal of introducing both the expert and general public to the current level of construction and architecture in the region. The jury will evaluate the overall architectural expression of the building and its incorporation into the surrounding environment. It will also assess the quality of construction work, material selection, energy efficiency, and originality. The eleven-member jury again consists of members of the Union of Entrepreneurs in Construction, the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians, the Association of Architects, and representatives of the region. Last year, the Grand Prix was awarded to the Roman Catholic church in Ostrava-Zábřeh, designed by the Brno architect Marek Štěpán. The Church of the Holy Spirit also received the main prize in the civic amenities category, where it shared first place with the renovation of the train station building in Ostrava-Svinov. Last year, the public also participated in the competition, with the most popular building among the 35 entries being a family house in Opava-Kylešovice by Opava architect David Wittasska. In the first year, the highest prize was awarded to the auditorium and information technology center of VŠB-TU in Ostrava-Poruba. The public praised the Koma parking garage in front of the Svinov train station.
