The Polish non-governmental organization My City Katowice is working to promote good architecture in Katowice and the entire Katowice agglomeration. It now invites all architects to participate in the competition for the design of the new Silesian Museum.

The new museum building is to be located on the site of a former coal mine, and its existing industrial buildings will be part of it. The museum will feature, among other things, one of the largest Polish collections of paintings.

Competitors must meet certain criteria, as the competition's results are expected to serve as the basis for subsequent preparation of the implementation documentation.

Further information can be found in the attached press release, on the organization’s website My City, or on the website of the Silesian Museum. Detailed competition conditions are available to interested parties until December 4, 2006, at the address of the competition organizer (SARP o/Katowice ul. Dyrekcyjna 9 (phone:+48 032 25 39 774, fax:+48 032 25 39 230))

Dear Sirs and Madams

“My City” is a non-governmental organization focused on acting for the development of the city of Katowice and other cities of the Katowice agglomeration. Among others, our aim is to promote good architecture in the cities, cooperate with local and regional authorities in this field, influence the authorities to create good “public space,” and propose our own solutions. We also try to work on the positive image of the cities of the Katowice agglomeration, promote their development among people in the region and elsewhere.

Our region, taking advantage of industrial and multicultural heritage, influenced by Czech, German, Jewish, and Polish culture, is now going through a process of dynamic social and economic changes. Silesia has become the second academic center in Poland in terms of the number of students and the third one in terms of the number of academic teachers. New industrial branches and the service sector are developing. Silesia has the densest express road network in Poland and one of the most dynamic airports in Europe in recent years. 13.7% of the Gross National Product (GNP) is produced in this region (second position in Poland). At the same time, a huge ecological effort has been made to reduce emissions of pollutants to each of the environmental compounds, causing vast improvement in environmental quality. The population of the Silesian urban area places us in 13th position on the list of the most populated urban areas in Europe and in 1st position in Eastern Europe!

Recently, one of the most important points of public discussion in our region is creating a new residence for the Silesian Museum. It is planned that the new Museum will be the image of the region, the gateway to Silesia. Based on this discussion, the Marshall Office of the Silesian Voivodeship (regional self-governmental authority) announced a competition for the architectural design of the new residence of the Silesian Museum. The object will be located on the area of a recently closed coal mine, and its buildings – good examples of industrial architecture – are intended to be incorporated into the new object. The investment site is close to the multipurpose arena “Spodek” (eng: saucer), which is one of the best architectural objects built in Poland after the war. We hope that the new museum will be as unique as the first residence of the Silesian Museum, a masterpiece designed by architect Karol Schayer and destroyed in the first months of war, which was remarkable in its time.

Among others, the new museum will house one of Poland's largest collections of Polish painting. It consists of works created by leading painters from the late nineteenth century to 1939 and is complemented by paintings, prints, drawings, posters, and sculptures created by contemporary artists. There will also be a very interesting and unique collection of non-professional art, a collection of decorative arts, an archaeological section, and ethnographic exhibits.

We believe that there are conditions for creating an outstanding work of architecture within the framework of this competition. Therefore, we would like to invite all architects who may be interested to take part in the competition organized by the Marshall Office of the Silesian Voivodeship. The competition was announced in the supplement to the Official Journal of the European Union, document number: 2006/S 211-226159, where you can find contact details. A short extract from the Competition Rules can also be found on our website: www.gkw.katowice.pl.

You cannot miss this unique opportunity to dignify this contest with your presence.
