Mikulčice (Hodonin Region) - The Archeopark in Mikulčice in the Hodonin region, dedicated to the local Great Moravian fortification Valy, will be reconstructed and overall redesigned according to the proposals of architects Markéta Veličková, Jan Cyrany, and Jitka Calabová. The plan includes not only the modernization of the complex but also the construction of glass panels in the terrain depicting the vanished buildings. A new tower with a view of the entire area will also be included. Jan Chmelíček, spokesperson for the South Moravian Regional Office, said this today. A total of ten proposals participated in the architectural competition for the renewal of the archeopark. The expert committee had them presented directly in Mikulčice, where they selected the best one. Further similarities of the entire project are not yet known. The costs have not been specified either. However, it is estimated that the modernization of the famous complex will cost tens of millions of crowns. The aim of the adjustments is to emphasize the preserved foundations of buildings, predominantly numerous churches at Valy, and to make the exhibits, both outdoors and in the Mikulčice pavilions, more attractive to tourists. One of the main tasks planned in the revitalization is to raise the stone foundations of the discovered Great Moravian churches by one meter. In the future, a bridge will connect Mikulčice and the neighboring Slovak village of Kopčany, where a church from the times of Great Moravia still stands. According to experts, the Mikulčice-Kopčany archeopark is so unique that it has been proposed for entry among UNESCO World Heritage Sites. However, in recent weeks, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have withdrawn this candidacy. They justified this step by stating that the complex is not yet fully prepared to be assessed for possible inclusion in UNESCO. If the proposal had failed, the archeopark could no longer be nominated for the list.
