Brno - One of the new attractions of South Moravia will be the archeopark between Dolní Věstonice and Pavlov in the Břeclav region, which will showcase the era of mammoth hunters starting this year. The construction costing more than 100 million crowns, which is also funded by European Union funds, will open at the end of May with a delay, said Petr Kubín, director of the Mikulov regional museum, to reporters at the Regiontour fair in Brno today.

The final opening of the archeopark will be delayed by about six months; the project has been in preparation for more than ten years. According to Kubín, the construction of the new museum is an absolutely exceptional matter. The location where the museum will be built is unique on a global scale, according to him. "This is where the oldest evidence of clay firing in the world can be found, as well as the oldest evidence of textile production in the world," Kubín stated. Therefore, he believes the architectural design of the building is also exceptional, where the installation of the exhibition is currently being prepared.

The modern building will be partially underground. Visitors should feel like they are stepping back in time to when one of the hunter settlements stood at the exhibition site. In the middle of the building, there will be an uncovered archaeological site with skeletons and artifacts. According to Kubín, the complex of settlements from the period of mammoth hunters has provided a significant amount of stone and bone tools, as well as skeletal remains of the predecessors of today's humans over many decades of research.

The history of the research will be presented through period photographs and documents, but primarily the material and spiritual world of the people of that time. Attention will be focused on hunting, daily life in the settlement, as well as art and rituals. The project, according to Kubín, includes plans for further development in the future, particularly through the establishment of an educational trail describing key finds directly in the field. There will be originals and copies of the finds on site.

Dolní Věstonice is among the world-famous areas inhabited by mammoth hunters. This location was so densely populated 30,000 years ago that scientists refer to it as the Paleolithic New York. The most significant find is the Venus of Věstonice, which is housed in the collections of the Moravian Museum in Brno.

The new building will cover one of the settlements from the older Stone Age, preserved in the state in which it was found by archeologists. The exhibition will also include dioramas illustrating the life of hunters. The creators of the exhibition anticipate that the archeopark could attract up to 40,000 visitors annually.
