This year's 3rd edition of the Rockhouse – Czech Low-Energy House competition is different from the previous two. The announcement of the results comes at a time when we stand on the threshold of a new era – the era of energy savings and ecological buildings.
“At the time the first edition began, there was only whispering about the need for buildings to be respectful of natural resources, their surroundings, and to meet the comfort of the 21st century,” states Josef Smola, a long-time promoter of low-energy buildings and a jury member, “today, energy-efficient buildings are a necessity, and those who cannot devise them will not succeed.” “Yes, and that’s why we were strict,” adds Eva Jiřičná, the jury chair. The architect, who loves vibrant colors and almost studied chemical formulas and compounds instead of architecture. The deputy chair of the jury is Jan Tywoniak, a professor at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Czech Technical University in Prague, a typical representative of the symbiosis of theory and practice. Besides teaching at the faculty and writing books about low-energy houses, he has collaborated with the companies Atrea and Rockwool on the construction of a unique location called Koberovy in the Czech Paradise, where you can find a collection of 13 energy-passive houses. Although they are simple, they utilize sufficient insulation, a recuperative heat exchanger, solar collectors, and photovoltaic panels – simply ideal houses in energy emergencies. Regarding the Rockhouse competition, Jan Tywoniak says: “This year we have, for the first time, connected both students and professionals, and prepared a common category for them called Project. The difference in quality that was noticeable not long ago simply does not exist anymore; today’s students are well-prepared for this issue. The second category, Reconstruction, was a bit of a step into the unknown, but we wanted to be one step ahead. Today, we do not regret it; current developments have confirmed that we are on the right path,” he smiles modestly. He does not need to be modest, as he was the only one quoted by Martin Bursík when he mentioned his advisors for the Green Savings program on Czech Television. Other jurors include Miloslav Meixner from the Faculty of Architecture at VUT in Brno, Jan Novák as a representative of the organizing company Rockwool, a.s., and "newcomer" Vladimír Merta, a singer, musician, and filmmaker, who is also a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture at Czech Technical University in Prague. The last juror is Oleg Haman, chairman of the Chamber of Architects, and one of the substitutes is Mojmír Hudec, a diligent designer of very elegant yet simple houses.
The high standards of the jury ultimately resulted in two 2nd places and two 3rd places in the Project category; two other interesting works received awards outside the competition for their originality and inspiration. Although all submitted designs were classified in the Project category, one placement was ultimately in the Reconstruction category. The jury “after discussion values the competition work no. 57 as a reconstruction and extension of the existing building with convincing qualities”. At the same time, the jurors appreciated this work as one of the best in the entire competition and also as an example worthy of following in the area of reconstruction and renovation of craftsman-quality, albeit modestly sized historical technical buildings and their new use for residential purposes. For these reasons, only one 2nd prize was exceptionally awarded. “In this case, one swallow makes the spring,” commented the work of František Denk by one of the jurors. Rockhouse – Czech Low-Energy House became a pioneer of “new construction thinking” three years ago, and today’s creators know the paths that we all call for. An incredibly high number of 64 submissions is a testament to that.
