Prague - Prague city council today approved the conditions for a public competition for the use and development of Štvanice Island. The conditions still need to be approved by the Czech Chamber of Architects, after which the competition will be announced. This was reported by the press department of the Prague City Hall. The competition will be in two rounds, and all proposals will be exhibited.

"The aim is to redefine the place of Štvanice Island and its connections to the surrounding parts of central Prague. The proposal should respect the intention of year-round use of the island for sports activities, relaxation, and the organization of cultural events," stated councilor Aleksandra Udženija (ODS).
In the first round, participants in the competition will submit conceptual designs. Prague will select three to ten proposals from these, which will proceed to the second round. The city will then invite their authors to specify their projects.
The councilors also approved the composition of the jury that will evaluate the proposals. It will include councilor Udženija, Deputy Mayor Tomáš Hudeček (TOP 09), city hall official Petr Svoboda, and architect Roman Koucký from the Development Department of the City of Prague. Other architects will also be part of the jury, such as Josef Pleskot, Jakub Fišer, and Martina Forejtová.
Štvanice Island in Prague got its name because hunts (štvanice) of game were held there in the 19th century. In the past, icehouses also functioned there. In the 1930s, a winter stadium was built on the island, which was demolished last year due to poor technical condition. The stadium was protected as a monument, and its demolition was opposed by preservationists and a large part of the public.
