Prague - The future appearance of the protected National Freight Station Žižkov will be determined by an architectural and urban planning competition. This was agreed upon today by the representatives of Prague 3 during an extraordinary meeting. The municipal office will cooperate with the Prague Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) in preparing the competition. According to long-term plans, the expansive functionalist building is to be transformed into a cultural and educational center.
"The building will be approached sensitively in accordance with the conditions that will be specified in the competition," said Mayor Vladislava Hujová (TOP 09) during the meeting. "The competition will be entirely in the hands of experts, to ensure continuity over several electoral terms," she claims. According to her, there is also an agreement with the owner, the Žižkov Station Development company, that is, Czech Railways and Sekyra Group. The investor is expected to finance the urban planning competition, she said. According to the materials designated for the representatives, it is already clear that a school should be built on the premises. A tram line will lead to the building.
For several years, there have been heated discussions about the fate of the functionalist freight station building. Representatives of the owner, the developer, and the municipal office signed a memorandum nearly two years ago, in which they agreed on the future cultural use of the protected structure. However, the reconstruction of the expansive station building into a social and cultural center would cost around two billion crowns. There is to be extensive construction in its surroundings.
The building from the 1930s was considered by experts to be one of the most modern of its kind in Europe, both in terms of technology and architecture.
