Prague - Grand Prix of Architects Awards in Grand Prix of Architects was awarded today at the Trade Fair Palace in Prague to six buildings or renovations, and the lifetime achievement award went to architect Jan Bočan. In the new construction category, the jury, composed exclusively of foreign architects, selected the library in Hradec Králové by the Projektil studio and the urban house in Brno built by Dobrý dům. An exhibition of a hundred works submitted to the competition will be held at the Trade Fair Palace from Friday until August 2.
The building with garages, a shop, offices, and two apartments on Milady Horákové Street in Brno was designed by the chairman of the Czech Chamber of Architects Dalibor Borák, Helena Boráková, and Martin Příhoda. According to the jury, it naturally integrates with the neighboring houses featuring ornamental façades from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The house has already received an award in the South Moravian Region Building competition and is frequently cited and published.
In the same category, the jury also appreciated the Study and Research Library in Hradec Králové, built by the Projektil architects studio (Roman Brychta, Adam Halíř, Ondřej Hofmeister, Petr Lešek). The jury noted that the building is "a solid and distinctive object that respects the quality of its surroundings, providing experiences of sightlines and passages, along with a calm internal environment." The jury believed that the location of the library lacked a solid urban concept. "The building is of a solid shape and clear stance, giving meaning and a point to its surroundings," it stated.
Among renovations, the jury selected the reconstruction of the Česká spořitelna branch on Rytířská Street in Prague, prepared by Gabriela Kaprálová. In the interior category, the atrium of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at ČVUT in Prague from the Vyšehrad studio received an award. It was created by roofing an unused courtyard of the building and includes space for education, consultation rooms, a workshop, and a relaxation zone.
In the single-family house category, the jury awarded two prizes without ranking. A weekend house in Rudoltice in East Bohemia was built by Pavel Hladík and Filip Dubský from the Nolimat studio. The second award went to a family house in Zdiměřice near Prague, built by Stanislav Fiala from the D3A studio.
The often-cited house has a square floor plan cut by a bay of organic shape, which introduces the garden inside and is characteristic of the house. According to the jury, the house is also well technically equipped. The heating and cooling system is based on a combination of using a heat pump and solar collectors.
The exhibition and competition of contemporary Czech architecture, Grand Prix of Architects, is jointly organized by the Association of Architects and the Czech Chamber of Architects. It is open to all architects whose buildings were completed in the past year on the territory of the Czech Republic.
In the 16th year of the competition, 101 projects in seven categories were submitted, with the most in the new construction category (26 entries). The family house, renovation, and interior categories had approximately the same representation; the landscape and garden design, architecture design, and urbanism categories had only four, eight, and three submissions, respectively, and the jury did not award any prizes in those categories.
