Karlovy Vary - The leadership of Karlovy Vary will prepare a schedule for the architectural competition for the Vřídlo colonnade. It is meant to be an alternative in case people do not decide in a municipal referendum in January on the construction of a replica of the colonnade from the late 19th century. The processing of the schedule was requested by the city's representatives.

According to the mayor of Karlovy Vary, Petr Kulhánek (KOA), the timeline for preparing the international architectural competition would have been developed by the city anyway.

"If for any reason the result of the referendum is not valid or binding, we obviously have a scenario set up to arrive at a recommendation based on the prepared documentation, which is the preparation of the international architectural competition," Kulhánek told ČTK. He reminded that, according to estimates, the competition would not be prepared in months, but rather in years.

In January, concurrently with the presidential elections, the residents of Karlovy Vary are to decide whether they want the current colonnade from the 1970s to be replaced by a replica of the cast-iron colonnade according to the design of architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer.

Although the initiators of the referendum estimate the costs for the construction of the replica at around 250 million crowns, according to the city's estimates, the costs, including the necessary intervention in the colonnade's underground, where the Vřídlo springs, would be several times higher.
