Domažlice - Domažlice wants to gather ideas and visions from experts on the possibilities of utilizing the extensive space of the former brewery. Therefore, the town hall has announced its very first architectural competition. It aims to find the best solution. The historic building of the now-abandoned brewery is intended mainly for cultural and social purposes, and the city would also like to revive beer production, at least in the form of a microbrewery, said Mayor Miroslav Mach to ČTK. "It is a building that we all hold dear in our hearts and minds as something that inherently belongs to the city," he remarked. Similarly, the Chod people perceive that the brewery, which was historically municipal, should remain in the hands of the city. The town hall envisions that a multicultural center and an attraction for tourists could be created within the five floors of the large 18th-century building. The monument-protected structure itself will not change its appearance. The competition is meant to seek ideas for utilizing the interior layout. The facility should offer spaces for concerts, alternative theater, and social gatherings. "We would likely want to use one exhibition hall for an exhibition about the Hussite history of the city," plans the mayor. One floor could be designated for a library, which would then have attractive and, above all, sufficiently spacious areas. "Our goal is to preserve as much of the old as possible - these are beautiful columned wooden structures that have great load-bearing capacity," Mach described. The town hall estimates that the necessary modifications to the buildings should cost about 65 million crowns. This sum includes approximately eight million for the technology of the microbrewery. Beer has been brewed in Domažlice since 1341. The city no longer has ambitions to export it to Bavaria as it once did, but to use it for the needs of a restaurant that is also planned to be established in the brewery. In addition, a glass furnace should fit into the facility, where a glassblower will demonstrate their craft. The overall attractiveness of the cultural center for tourists is also expected to be enhanced by combining it with traditional Chod music and typical Chod bagpipes. The city is currently completing its largest investment project in history - the construction of sewage and water supply systems costing more than half a billion. This will also incur related costs associated with the repair of road and sidewalk surfaces. However, Mach anticipates that if the municipal budget allows, next year the town hall may proceed with work on the brewery. Furthermore, it will seek possible grant sources.
