Brno – The main entrance to the Central Cemetery in Brno is expected to receive a new look in the coming years. The Brno city council approved the preparation of an architectural-urban competition, which is intended to result in the design of the broader area of the main entrance. The city announced this in a press release.
"Given that this is a monument-protected area, we want to approach the proposal for changes conceptually and with humility. For this reason, we will announce a competition aimed at designing the appearance of the main entrance, the administrative building for administration, and the adjacent public space in the cemetery area, including public transport stops," stated Brno Mayor Markéta Vaňková (ODS).
The stalls on the street and the building known as the "likusák" are expected to disappear, to be replaced by new buildings that will provide facilities for cemetery management staff in addition to shops.
"The subject of the competition will also include proposals for the construction of operational buildings along the boundary wall and a refreshment or stonemason shop. The street stalls will be replaced by a florist, making the area more representative and tidy. Architects and urban planners will also propose the design of the orientation system and furnishings, including water collection points, which we would like to extend throughout the cemetery. No less important components of the competition will include garden layout adjustments and planting greenery," said the Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).
According to him, the costs for the adjustments and construction of the buildings should be in the range of several million crowns. The competition will be prepared by the Office of the City Architect of Brno and is expected to be announced this April.
