The Central Cemetery in Brno will have a new entrance estimated at 70 million

Brno - Brno will build a new entrance at the Central Cemetery. It is estimated to cost 70 million crowns, said the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL) to reporters. The urban planning-architectural competition for the design of the entrance was won by the Refuel studio. Brno has 11 cemeteries, and the Central Cemetery is the largest.

The city announced the competition in mid-June, and proposals could be submitted until mid-September. "The evaluation meeting of the competition jury took place on October 14, and the jurors assessed five proposals, particularly concerning the mutual composition of the main entrance with the adjoining mourning hall, designed by the world-renowned architect Bohuslav Fuchs," stated the mayor's deputy Tomáš Koláčný (Pirates).

The ranking compiled by the jury was approved by the council today. The winning design was by the architectural studio Refuel, the second place went to the architectural and urban studio Menšík Skrušný, and third was the concept by architect Jan Javůrek and F POINT. "The design by the winning studio Refuel is, according to the jurors, cultivated and sensitive in relation to the current composition of the Central Cemetery. The entrance structure facing Vídeňská creates a pleasant quiet space visually screened off by an avenue from the transit street. The technical background is addressed efficiently and humbly concerning the character of the cemetery environment, and the concept of rainwater management is presented convincingly," said the mayor's deputy Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).

According to him, the jury formulated recommendations during the evaluation of the proposals for both the client and the creators of the awarded designs. "They recommended limiting personal car traffic throughout the cemetery area to the necessary minimum and to address the parking of mourning guests elsewhere. We will implement the entire project in phases," Hladík added.

If the city agrees with the winner, the studio will receive a contract for the preparation of project documentation. "By December 20, the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno will also prepare a public exhibition of the competition proposals," described the next steps councilor for urban planning and development Filip Chvátal.

Brno has 11 cemeteries, with a total of about 100,000 burial sites. The Central Cemetery is the largest, with around 80,000 sites. Other cemeteries are located in the city districts of Komín, Královo Pole, Jehnice, Líšeň, Řečkovice, Slatina, Soběšice, Tuřany, Žebětín, and Židenice.
