Prague, Vodňany – The town of Vodňany, with the support of the Proměny Foundation, announces a public architectural and urban planning competition for the design of the renewal of the V Zátiší forest park. The results of the competition are expected to be known in September, and the selected design will serve as the basis for the transformation of the currently neglected area. The foundation has provided a grant of nearly CZK 900,000 to the town for the preparation and organization of the competition.
The competition is announced as a public and two-round event, with the deadline for submission of competition designs in the first round set for May 26. Interested parties can find all the details and materials on the website vodnanyvzatisi.cz, which the town has set up for the project. The proposals will be evaluated by a five-member jury composed of independent experts and representatives of the town of Vodňany. Five proposals will advance to the second round, and presentations of the competition results and an exhibition for the general public will take place in the location in late September and early October.
Jitka Přerovská, director of the Proměny Foundation, says: “We have been following the efforts of the Vodňany community to transform Zátiší for several years since the project was shortlisted in our grant call 2010-2011. Although it did not succeed at that time, the town continued its preparations. We appreciate the significant progress they have made during this time. We really like their approach to the project—they practically embody the principles we support and strive to promote further: involving local residents, thinking conceptually, not forgetting sustainability, and wanting to create a truly vibrant place for people. We have also contributed to the preparation and organization of the competition because we have long promoted architectural competitions as the best tool for creating public space. The way Vodňany approaches the development of its spaces would hold up even in international competition. We believe they set a great example for other Czech towns.”
“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the transformation of Zátiší so far. We look forward to seeing what new connections will emerge from the announced competition,” adds Pavel Janšta, Deputy Mayor of the town of Vodňany.
Vodňany's aim is to revitalize the neglected Zátiší and make it a valuable part of the town. The forest park, which offers views of the town, the adjacent system of ponds, and the surrounding landscape, is to become a year-round destination for visitors of all interests and generations after the transformation, linking the local areas of Radčice and Křtětice with the center and strengthening the bond between students of fishing schools and the local community.
In addition to the grant, the Proměny Foundation also provided consultations and recommendations to the town for individual steps during the project's preparation. The architectural competition builds on previous activities involving various stakeholders, including the Vodňany žijou association, the town, fishing schools, architects, artists, local scouts, and citizens. The transformation of the forest park was initiated by a two-week architectural workshop re:Vodňany 2012 in Zátiší, which attracted public interest to the location and brought the participating creators the first prize for architectural design at the Grand Prix of Architects 2013. In the summer of 2013, artists gathered again in Vodňany and connected the forest park, the town, and the research facilities of the Faculty of Fisheries and Water Protection of the University of South Bohemia with the educational trail Water is Science.
