The exhibition at the Bethlehem Chapel will showcase the architecture of the city of Brasília. Visitors will be able to familiarize themselves with the iconic buildings of the world-famous architect Oscar Niemeyer.
The exhibition “Architecture and Power – The Palaces of Brasília,” organized by the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, will present aspects of the architecture of the Brazilian capital Brasília. The event is an initiative of the Czech Technical University in Prague, the Embassy of Brazil in the Czech Republic, and the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Brazil, held under the auspices of the Czech Chamber of Architects.
The general public will have the opportunity to explore the architectural gems of Oscar Niemeyer – the Palácio da Alvorada, Palácio do Planalto, Palácio Itamaraty, the Supreme Federal Court building, and the National Congress. The event will also include an international conference dedicated to the vision of modern cities, documented through examples from Zlín and five Brazilian cities founded by Jan Antonín Baťa after his emigration. The exhibition will take place in the St. Wenceslas Hall of the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague and will be accessible to visitors upon request, with guided tours available on November 5 and 12, 2023. In December, it will be freely viewable in the atrium of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague.
“The aim of the exhibition is to present Brazilian artistic and cultural heritage, which represents Brazilian architecture and identity,” says architect Marco Maio, a faculty member of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University, who is behind the project's inception. The exhibition will offer visitors the chance to encounter unique photographs and building plans that have contributed to shaping today's aesthetics and construction principles. For the first time, models of individual objects, scaled at 1:300, will also be presented to showcase their originality and impressiveness. The models were created by students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University using 3D printing.
“We believe that interest in the exhibition will come from a wide range of the public, as Oscar Niemeyer’s work has never been presented in this aspect here, as well as from students, as every architecture student and those in related fields should know these buildings. The exhibition and accompanying program present these topics in a comprehensive and very interesting way,” says Prof. Mikuláš Hulec, head of the Department of Architecture at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University, who is coordinating the project.
The connecting bridge of the international conference “Visions of Modern Cities” will be the personalities of Tomáš and Jan Antonín Baťa and Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliveira, the Brazilian president from the late 1950s and early 1960s with Czech roots, and their visions of modern settlements.
“Using the examples of Brasília and Zlín, as well as other newly founded cities in the mid-twentieth century in both countries, we would like to develop an open discussion to assess the global significance of the Czech contribution to newly founded settlements in the 20th century,” states Marco Maio. “Topics will include the emergence of cities like Batatuba, Bataguassu, Batayporã, and others,” adds Marco Maio from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. Conference topics will include modern cities, their planning, and premises, as well as comparisons of Czech and Brazilian conditions in contrast between the two countries in terms of area, climate, and history.
The exhibition “Architecture and Power – The Palaces of Brasília” and the conference “Visions of Modern Cities” contribute to promoting significant Brazilian artistic and cultural heritage and represent Brazilian architecture and identity. This is part of a series of activities aimed at strengthening cultural exchange between Brazil and the Czech Republic and activities supporting academic cooperation with Brazilian institutions. Planned events will focus on aspects of modern architecture and urbanism in both countries, with a special focus on the cities of Brasília and Zlín.
The exhibition “Architecture and Power – The Palaces of Brasília” can be viewed in the St. Wenceslas Hall of the Bethlehem Chapel in Prague throughout November 2023 upon request, or guided tours can be utilized on November 5 and 12.
