Solution for the Central Zone in Pec pod Sněžkou

Solution for the Central Zone in Pec pod Sněžkou

In 1973, together with Emil Přikryl, we participated in an invited urban mini-competition in Pec pod Sněžkou, where the Horizont hotel was already standing at that time. The task was to find a suitable arrangement for additional hotels; however, we said that no further hotels should be built there and proposed to enclose the valley with a one-kilometer-long mass of a universal structure. This was meant to replace all further dispersed development in Pec, absorb the crowds of automobile-dependent skiers, and offer them everything they need (housing, parking, services, indoor sports, entertainment, restaurants, etc.). With this solution, we aimed to bring skiers directly to the slopes while keeping the surrounding landscape untouched. The original village was to be transformed in our vision into an open-air museum for social life needs. Incoming cars were to disappear into our super-house into continuous two-story garages. Above them, several layers of housing were proposed, and below was a commercial gallery, through which a chairlift ran the entire length, heading towards the slopes at Liščí hora.

Geometric preforms demonstrate a strong will to exist even in those Přikryl's projects that did resemble the mechanization of the SIAL School. Such were the architect's works in the first half of the seventies. The multifunctional urban center in Pec pod Sněžkou (1972) was intended by Emil Přikryl and Jiří Suchomel to be anchored into the Krkonoš valley in the style of the visions of the Italian neo-avant-garde group Superstudio. The authors conceived their unrealized work as a linear multi-storey city-house with many parking spaces and services for mountain visitors, and at the same time as "salami architecture", whose elongated, variously rounded body could be extended or shortened as needed.
