Evaluation of the competition jury:
The proposal is of high quality from both urban and architectural perspectives; it is inventive, comprehensive, meets the brief, and with minor adjustments allows for multifunctional use of the proposed spaces. It respects the anticipated budget costs. The architectural solution is contemporary and refined, bringing a new architectural quality to the image of the town while simultaneously respecting its atmosphere, scale, and character.
The design preserves the mass and color of the existing kindergarten façade but complements it with a refined addition of cubic forms for the new entrance, gymnasium, and cafeteria. Although the added parts use entirely contemporary and deliberately sober expressive means (not appealing to the colors of the existing kindergarten – the only feature being the graphics of the pictograms), the resulting entity appears surprisingly consistent.
The efficiency of land use must be appreciated – the currently unattractive space between U Sokolovny Street and the front facade of the shifted kindergarten building is utilized for the addition of the gymnasium, new entrance, longitudinal communication corridor, publicly accessible space with trees, benches, bicycle racks, and a pond, and partly also for the cafeteria addition. Minimal encroachment into the adjacent area of the Sokolski Field (for further planned activities) is achieved, furthermore enhancing it with the attractive glazed section of the cafeteria. The removal of the majority of the fence in front of the area and its transformation into an open, welcoming, and refined public space bordered by architecture (not a fence) is exemplary.
This intensive use of the front space has also brought a positive aspect in terms of urban context: the wing of the gymnasium has approached (albeit not entirely consistently) the line established by the building line on the southeast side of U Sokolovny Street.
