Loučná – revitalization of the historic schoolLoučná is a small settlement in the Ore Mountains that has experienced a dramatic decline in population due to depopulation. From the original more than 280 people, only 22 now live here permanently. The renovation of the former school into a recreational facility thus represents not only the preservation of a historic building but also a contribution to the revitalization of the region.
Architectural conceptThe aim was to maintain the authentic expression of the historic building while incorporating contemporary elements in a clearly legible form. The existing masonry part with a gable roof was cleaned of inappropriate interventions and adapted for recreational living. Only the truss was insulated, which received a new dormer.
A new extension made of exposed reinforced concrete adjoins the original building, serving as a retaining wall for the slope and naturally blending with the terrain thanks to the green roof. The extension contrasts with the original structure, thereby emphasizing the historical layering.
Spatial solutionOn the ground floor of the main building, there is a communal space with a kitchen, while the upper floor serves as the accommodation area. The previously unused attic has been opened up and expanded the residential capacity. The basement houses a wine cellar.
The extension includes a relaxation area, technical facilities, and a bicycle storage room. A key element is the connection between the interior and the exterior – large-format windows open views of the landscape and blur the boundary between the inner and outer spaces.
Spatial integrationThe outdoor paved area connects the various parts of the building and serves as a recreation zone with a mature tree. The intention was to create a harmonious connection between traditional and contemporary approaches to architecture, reflecting both the history of the building and the needs of today's recreational living.
