Residential block on Matznergasse - Sargfabrik

The receptacle for potential regeneration of historical blocks is a quality example of residential architecture in the urban environment of Vienna's 14th district. A group of young architects created a larger complex here that includes not only residential areas but also social spaces – restaurants, club rooms, and a pool. The new architecture is distinguished from the existing structures by a striking orange color, which, in combination with green and gray, creates a pleasant living atmosphere.
The former coffin factory provided a number of diverse residential layouts. A major advantage of the complex is its access to public and private spaces, as is customary in residential complexes in Vienna. The healthy social climate is reflected in the generosity of the residents, who, unlike those on Leopoldauerstrasse, smiled at us and allowed us to peek into their private courtyards. The residential complex in the courtyard on Matznergasse is a quality example of urban social housing. The chosen materials and modern forms positively influence the lives of the residents of this block.
The building received the Builder's Award and the Adolf Loos Prize in 1996.
