The area of Mercandinovy sady is a typical example of landscape architecture. It is a creation of humanity that arose from its collaboration with nature. The Klatovy governor František Xaver Mercandin initiated the establishment of the park between 1841 and 1845. The design is based on a return to a composed landscape that honors the memory of the place while also allowing for reflection on the current needs of society, contemporary lifestyle, and the spirit of the times.
The road network is designed to accommodate the presence of people in the park while also servicing the main transit routes. The new oval promenade in front of the Kolonáda café emerges from the historical garden parterre. The promenade gently hovers above the central glade thanks to the elevated oval rim. Adjacent to the central parterre is a water surface with a new dock and gazebo. In the middle of the water surface, a circular island has been restored, including new convex modeling. According to the design, a new monument in the form of a circular bench made of stone by Václav Fiala has been placed on the island, dedicated to the landscape architect Václav Weinfurter. In spring, everywhere on the island are blooming daffodils in the lawn.
The collection of buildings within the landscape complex includes a new water program - a new fountain was created in front of the Kolonáda with a text by President Václav Havel, a new water spout has emerged in the middle of the pond, and there is a water replenishment to the pond. Furthermore, the sculptural program has been newly configured. The original four allegorical sculptures of the seasons – Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter – and the fifth sculpture dedicated to F. X. Mercandin have been positioned as a counterbalance to the Kolonáda on an analogously arched plan. The building also includes a complete renewal of the technical infrastructure - water supply, sewage system, a new gas connection for the Kolonáda, electricity, and public lighting.
