Habrmanovo Square is the only larger place in the Doubravka district of Plzeň where people can gather and where social events can take place. The local government decided to build a new gazebo with a stage – it is intended for intimate performances, concerts, and city events. Within the authorial team, we agreed right at the beginning of the project that we didn’t want the gazebo to become a barrier. We thus excluded vertical walls.
The concept, shape, and especially the construction are inspired by nature. With the help of colored photographs from an electron microscope and with the assistance of a structural engineer, we diligently explored dead ends and sought ways to design airy, transparent columns for the gazebo or how to solve the roof. In the end, we found a photograph of a cell structure of fly wings magnified 1,000,000 times. We connected the columns with a steel lattice inspired by the structure of the wing, and the lattices statically work together.
The roof structure of the gazebo consists of two parts – two groups of steel columns with intermediate latticework and the steel structure of the roof. The columns with intermediate latticework rise from a reinforced concrete podium with a mechanically scratched, concrete surface and support the roof, which was constructed from spatially organized truss beams made of square tubes.
The roof structure is welded from hot-dip galvanized parts, finished with a visual edge made of copper sheet, which was pre-patinated green (verdigris).
The construction, in addition to the gazebo, included stone pavement of the sidewalks, drainage, and lighting of the square, including festive illumination of the gazebo and the statue in the middle of the square.
Throughout the entire project from the concept, through searching for the construction, to the completion of the building, our team was carried by the spirit of the work of Jan Kaplický. In the toughest moments of the project, we were inspired by his working style, which we know from documentary films, interviews, and stories told by Eva Jiřičná.
