The goal of the reconstruction of a 3+1 apartment in Vršovice was to find a sensitive connection between original elements and new ones, creating a functional space for a young family with minimal layout changes.
The wooden parquet floors, original doors, and radiators were refurbished. New lighting was designed, and all built-in furniture was made from beech plywood in combination with light gray panels. The plywood furniture takes advantage of this material's possibilities and generates interesting details such as rounded corners and perforations. The materials and the circle motif repeat throughout. Circular views through the walls and round mirrors bring a playful and surprising element to the apartment, despite their basic nature. The flooring running throughout the space in one level unifies the interior.
The layout remained almost unchanged. The bedroom, children's room, bathroom, and living area were preserved, with a very rational spatial solution. The only demolition occurred in the space between the hallway and the kitchen, where the opening was enlarged, and a circular view was cut into the dividing wall. The reason was to visually enlarge the space, connect it, and maximize natural light. The kitchen corner is located in a transit room that has no windows, which was the subject of long discussions. The aim was to preserve the original double-wing doors to the living area while having the kitchen in the center of the action. The compromise was a bright kitchen spread across both walls of the space with an island in the middle. Artificial lighting allows for various levels of illumination. The furniture wall also includes a small nook with seating and a wall made of perforated plywood, where shelf positions can be varied or used as a bulletin board. The work island, aside from its practical function, ensures a better overview from the kitchen into other areas. The rounded corners of the island are intended to eliminate the feeling of a barrier.
