LOCATION / CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREAThe first train station in public space and private administration in the Czech Republic is located in a completely new position at the Czech-German state border, at the crossing of the railway line 828 Dresden - Ebersbach - Zittau - Liberec - Tanvald and the Rumburská road. The stop connects the adjacent part of the town of Varnsdorf and the Kocour Brewery area to the system of public urban and regional cross-border transport networks.
ARCHITECTURE / IDEA AND CONCEPTThe idea for the design of the platform object draws from the industrial atmosphere and history of the place, the identification with the Varnsdorf Kocour Brewery, and the context and links to small architecture and landscaping in the brewery area.
The concept of the mass solution in the simple form outlines two protruding partially open cubes, drawing inspiration from historically used wooden brewery crates and beer baskets.
From the interior of these protruding cubes, a massive wooden bench emerges parallel to the railway line into the exterior space, featuring a description of the names of train stations, concluded and supported by the brewery's logo - a steel "sculpture" of a cat.
The concept of the platform object refers to its material solution - a steel structure, thick-walled steel plate with a thickness of 20 mm, designed to rust over the life cycle of the building - reflecting the industrial identity of the site. The thick-walled steel plate is perforated with circular openings in the shape of the brewery's logo to allow an engaging distribution of light into the interior, while nighttime lighting with linear LED strips illuminates the logos through the perforation of the walls into the dark exterior.
The floor of the shelter is designed with a galvanized steel grating with a powder-coated surface, which over time acquires the intended patina - the black color gradually wears off in the areas of the most intense use near the bench, exposing the zinc underneath. The exterior of the building is complemented by a white spray-painted identification sign with the name "Brewery".
ARCHITECTURE / DISPOSITION SOLUTIONThe interior of the two cubes is partially open to views of the railway line and partially closed off from adverse weather. Besides the bench for passengers, the interior features train schedules in atypical polycarbonate cases, a bottle opener, and a box for beer caps. In the rear part of the exterior of the building is a hidden lockable service installation space for tools for maintaining the platform, especially in winter, as well as electrical equipment and an outlet for concealed drainage of roof planes.
